Ice Hockey New Zealand’s High Performance Programme Sets a New Benchmark for Athlete Development
Ice Hockey New Zealand's High Performance Programme has made notable progress this year, with 219 athletes registered. Led by High Performance Director Darren Blong, it operates across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown, also supporting overseas athletes remotely. Aiming to lift the standard of New Zealand's national teams, it offers a clear development pathway for athletes at all stages—including those who have represented the country internationally and promising emerging talents. The programme provides weekly on-ice training (focusing on power skating, puck control, hockey IQ, etc.) and off-ice training (covering fitness, strength, conditioning, recovery, etc.), building a well-rounded environment aligned with international high-performance norms to prepare athletes for world championship success.
